Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp and Sheriff Ronnie Oakes hosted a press conference with various law enforcement agencies on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 to detail the status of a major drug-related mass-arrest operation executed by the Wise County Sheriff's Office, the Virginia State Police, and other law enforcement agencies, dubbed "Operation Frostbite."
On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, numerous state, federal, and local area law-enforcement agencies combined forces to conduct a "mass arrest" of 80 individuals who have recently been indicted by the Multi-Jurisdictional Grand Jury in 111 indictments, charging over 200 drug related offenses such as distribution, possession, and manufacturing of illegal narcotics, conspiracy to distribute narcotics, prescription fraud, child abuse & neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a child, and distribution of narcotics within 1,000 feet of a school.
The arrests stem from extensive investigations by the Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force involving illegal drug activity in Wise County and the City of Norton.
The Wise County Sheriff's Office, Southwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force, Norton City Police Department, Coeburn Police Department, Wise Police Department, Pound Police Department, Big Stone Gap Police Department, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, and the Virginia State Police participated in the coordinated effort. The Commonwealth's Attorney's office for Wise County & the City of Norton provided assistance during the Mass Arrest.
Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp said, "Over the course of the past several months, our office has been working closely with law enforcement in an effort to eradicate drug related crime in our region and today's operation is a significant step to keep dangerous illegal drugs off the street. Addressing the drug abuse crisis in our region has been, and continues to be, among our highest priorities. We are thankful for the amazing officers who are braving frosty conditions today and for their teamwork, dedication, and tireless efforts. The prosecutors in my office will now turn to the important task of prosecuting these cases and will likewise work hard to see that justice is served."
Wise County Sheriff, Ronnie Oakes, likewise, expressed his appreciation for the joint-effort of those who made this operation a success, "I am proud to be a part of this effort and thankful for the hard work of the officers involved in the operation today. It takes a great deal of work and investigation to arrest this number of drug offenders. I commend the hardworking officers of many different agencies who came together to make this operation a success."
A significant number of the offenses charged as part of this operation involve the dangerous drug known as methamphetamine. Slemp said, "These substances are highly addictive and highly dangerous, with scary side effects and potential to change a user's life instantly."
Charges include nearly 100 counts involving the of distribution a Schedule I or II drug – mostly synthetic narcotics or highly addictive prescription drugs. Almost 40 individuals are charged with offenses involving methamphetamine or synthetic drugs. These arrests include over 40 counts of distribution of buprenorphine, an addictive Schedule III prescription drug. Eleven counts included in today's charges involve distribution of drugs near school properties.
Law enforcement is continuing efforts to bring wanted individuals to justice.
More than a half dozen individuals in Southwest Virginia and Tennessee have pleaded guilty to charges in a federal drug ring case in Lee County. Among those pleading guilty are 41 year old Jeremy Rick Sturgill of Jonesville and 27 year old Tony Lynn Ketron of Church Hill Tennessee...both pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine into the area. A number of Co- conspirators have already pleaded guilty for their part in the case.

(CNN/WYMT) - Rite Aid pharmacies across the region are set to transition to Walgreens locations as part of a merger between the companies. CNN Money reports officials with Walgreens originally tried to buy the entire company, but federal officials blocked the move because it would only leave two major pharmacy chains in the United States. The revised deal includes more than 1,900 stores. Rite Aid officials confirmed in an email to WYMT that all of the stores in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, and many of the stores in Virginia, are part of the merger, which is still underway. Some of the stores have already started the transition, others will between now and sometime this spring.
