A Norton Virginia Man Is Facing Charges After Allegedly Stabbing His Wife. Jonathan Eric Smith Is Charged With Attempted First Degree Murder In The Incident Yesterday At Hillside Apartments On 9th Street Northwest. When Officers Arrived They Found A Woman Lying In The Yard Suffering From Multiple Stab Wounds. Smith Came Out Of The Apartment With A Knife And Eventually Complied With Officers And Dropped The Weapon. He Also Suffered A Stab Wound To The Neck. Both Were Taken To A Kingsport Hospital. Authorities Said The Female Suffered Life-Threatening Injuries And Her Condition Is Unknown At This Time. The Incident Remains Under Investigation.
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring Has Issued An Opinion Saying Plans By The Lee County School District To Arm Teachers Is Unlawful. Herring Released A Statement Saying Virginia Law Expressly Limits Who May Possess Firearms On School Grounds For Safety Purposes. Wise County Commonwealth Attorney Chuck Slemp Weighed In On The Attorney General’s Opinion. Saying He Was Disappointed In It And Believes Local Officials Should Be Able To Determine What Measures Are Appropriate To Keep Students Safe In Our Schools.
Virginia State Police Are Investigating A Shooting In Lee County Virginia Which Left One Person Dead. It Happened Last Evening At A Home On Virginia Avenue In Pennington Gap. Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons Said The Victim Called 911 Saying He Had Been Shot. When Officers Arrived, The Man Was Dead. No Arrests Have Been Made And Police Are Asking Anyone With Information On This Shooting To Contact Them. The Body Has Been Taken To The Medical Examiner’s Office In Roanoke For An Autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office Received Its First Accreditation In 2002, Becoming The 13th Law Enforcement Agency And Fifth Sheriff’s Office In Virginia To Be Honored. They Were Also The First Agency In Far Southwest Virginia To Receive Accreditation. They Have Successfully Been Re-Accredited In 2006, 2010, 2014 And 2018.

Virginia’s unemployment rate has dropped slightly from June to July to 3.1 percent. It’s the sixth consecutive month that the labor force has expanded in the state. The jobless rate declined a tenth of a point from June to July. It was down from 3.7 percent in July 2017. Last month’s rate was the state’s lowest since August 2007. Virginia’s unemployment rate remained below the national rate in July, which was 3.9 percent in July.

A Wise County Grand Jury Has Indicted An Inmate At Wallens Ridge State Prison In Big Stone Gap Virginia On A Charge Of Capital Murder In The Killing Of A Fellow Inmate. William Sanders Is Accused Of Killing 55 Year Old Donald Gary In May Of This Year. Gary Was Serving A Life Sentence For Robbery And Carjacking In The Abduction Of Two Women From A Danville Trailer Park At Gunpoint. He Also Robbed A Man At A Car Wash And Took His Car. Sanders Will Be Arraigned In Circuit Court Next Month.
A Southwest Virginia Doctor And His Wife Have Been Indicted By A Wise County Jury On Over 100 Charges Related To Drug Distribution, Prescription Fraud, And Medicaid Fraud. Dr. Michael Ford Ran The Appalachian Medical Clinic And Is Currently Facing 124 Charges, His Wife Una Faye Ford, Who Worked At The Clinic As Well, Faces 110 Charges Along With An Employee, Debrorah Fugate Who Also Faces 24 Charges Related To Medicaid Fraud And Fraudulently Obtaining Narcotics. Agents Raided The Facility Earlier This Year.
