Thieves stole thousands of dollars' worth of items when they broke in Wednesday morning, Joy Howard said. Howard said the thieves took gifts from underneath the Christmas tree, as well as electronics, shoes and other items, including a basketball autographed by UK basketball coach John Calipari.
"Who does that?" Howard asked. "Who comes in this close to Christmas and literally goes to somebody's Christmas tree - and they probably thought there would be more presents under the tree than there were, thank goodness Santa doesn't come here until Christmas Eve - but to me that's very heartless."
Howard says neighbors saw a car pull up the road to their house around 11 a.m. Wednesday, and others saw it parked by their driveway. They described it as a dark gray Mitsubishi Eclipse or similar coupe, with tinted windows and black rims.
The Howards are glad no one was home at the time, but the ordeal has shattered this family's peace, just days before Christmas. Together they have three kids who live in the home, including two young girls. They say they made it clear to them that Santa is still coming for Christmas.
"We tried to be optimistic with our kids, we tried to be positive with our kids," Howard said. "This is definitely not something that we wanted to have to deal with as parents this time of year, how evil people can be, how evil the world can be."
