Flames consumed the home in the Kings Creek community on Highway 160 near the junction of Highway 931 South around three p.m. Wednesday.
No one was injured.
Talmage "Jack" Meade and his wife, Ernestine, lost almost all their possessions.
"Reality will probably set in the next day or two," he said. "I'm pretty strong. I can take it, I think."
Meade's wife was the only one home when the fire started. Neighbors helped her escape to safety.
Firefighters from several departments battled the flames. They could not save the house, but they stopped the flames from destroying the garage and prevented the fire from reaching nearby homes.
Meade's brother, Robert Meade, the chief of the King's Creek Volunteer Fire Dept., said, "It hurts me, I'll be honest. I love my brother more than anything."
Firefighters suspect an electric heater in an upstairs room might have started the fire.
The Meades said they have fire insurance and plan on rebuilding
