About 700 families continued to visit the temporary location. The Norton Community Hospital offered the location, which was in use until now.
"We are not thinking we will have to move again anytime soon," said Food Bank of Wise County, Inc. treasurer Lee Kidd, "and it's just super that we've got a place where we can continue the purpose for which we exist."
He said the building was found in large part with the help of county administrator Shannon Scott. It was purchased for about $200,000. The funding came from insurance from the previous building, funding from the governor's office, and outside donations. The food bank itself was responsible for nearly $16,000.
"It's super. There's no other way we could have acquired this facility on our own," Kidd said.
Unlike the temporary space, the new facility has heating and air, ample storage space, and private interview rooms for clients.
The new location is located at 200 Industrial Drive, Norton. It's open Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There's also a location in Big Stone Gap.
