"On Saturday, May 12, 2018, various news agencies reported that the Wise County Sheriff's Department and rescue crews responded to a report that a cave collapsed on a juvenile in the East Stone Gap area of Wise County. Law enforcement and emergency personnel immediately and thoroughly investigated this matter. The Wise County Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Appalachia Fire Department, and other agencies, expended significant resources searching the area and various caves.
After pursuing all leads, it was determined that the initial report was not credible and the source of the information was unreliable. There are no missing persons at this time in connection with this incident.
We want to thank the public for their prayers and concern. A big thank you should also be given to the hardworking officers, investigators, and emergency personnel who spent their time this weekend working long hours looking into this matter to ensure that everyone was accounted for and safe."
