We were there as authorities brought Travis Baldwin, 35, into custody.
Neighbor Eddie Blair was on his front porch as the search heated up. "I saw a bunch of police cruisers come in and the deputies come in."
Investigators tell us the search for Baldwin started around 7:30 p.m. Monday as a domestic call with shots fired after a fight with his girlfriend.
Baldwin's girlfriend told officers the two had a verbal altercation and fired several shots as he was leaving the residence, the report said. No injuries were reported.
"We came up with enough information to place charges. Those charges possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a felony and possession of ammunition after having been convicted of a felony," Wise County Chief Deputy Major Grant Kilgore said.
News 5 looked into Baldwin's criminal history and learned he served time after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery dating back to 2001. That is one reason police say they were concerned when they were unable to locate baldwin immediately following the incident.
Kilgore said, "I think mostly it was an emotional thing with a domestic partner. Obviously based on his record and the actions of last night, I think there is a certain element of danger to anyone who might encounter him."
"Once we seen the weapons drawn, everyone went inside the house," Blair told us, as his family watched the eventual capture.
Any kind of heavy police presence has been alarming to residents of Big Stone Gap following the murder of an Appalachia town employee last month.
"We've gotten a lot of calls thinking because of the large police presence there, we were there looking for Eric Jones who's tied to the other homicide case here in Wise County, it was not," Kilgore said.
This is one case that is quickly resolved and some relief to this community.
"The Wise County Sheriff's Office, they did a good job keeping the commotion down," Blair said.
We want to remind folks that the search continues for Eric Jones. He is accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife Janina Jefferson in Appalachia.
