Seventeen unanswered points in the second half sent the University of Charleston Golden Eagles to a 17-10 Mountain East Conference football victory over UVa-Wise on Thursday night in the final regular-season game for both teams.
UVa-Wise (6-5) lost its final two games of the year and blew a 10-0 lead in both contests.
A Carlton Griffith touchdown run and a Trent Martin field goal gave UVa-Wise a 10-point halftime lead on Thursday, but Charleston (3-8) rallied and went ahead for good on Marvin Elam’s touchdown run with 6:38 remaining.
Charleston finished with negative-30 rushing yards and just 148 yards of total offense, but still eked out the win.
Freshman Austin Atkinson (Richlands) had three catches for 45 yards for UVa-Wise and also saw time at quarterback for the Highland Cavaliers in a Wildcat-type formation. Another freshman, Buster Henderson, finished with 11 tackles.
Senior linebacker Zachary Blair recorded two tackles for loss in his final collegiate game for UVa-Wise and brought his NCAA Division II career record total in that category to 80.5.
The Cavs improved their win total by five in Dane Damron’s first season as head coach.
