WYTHEVILLE, Va. - State and local law enforcement partnered at the Virginia-Kentucky state line over the holiday weekend to help remind motorists that safe driving knows no boundaries. On the evening of May 25, 2019, the Virginia State Police, Kentucky State Police and Buchanan County Sheriff's Office conducted a joint checking detail at the state border on Route 460. Out of the 273 vehicles to travel through the two-hour checking detail, troopers and deputies issued eight summonses for such violations as expired inspection stickers and registration violations. One driver was charged with driving on a suspended license, and one criminal misdemeanor arrest was made.
"Having only 10 violations cited out of almost 275 vehicles is encouraging because it demonstrates that the majority of the vehicles and their drivers were buckled up, driving sober and had vehicles in good working condition," said 1st. Sgt. Jason Day, Virginia State Police Area 29 Commander. "The purpose of this checking detail was to reinforce safe driving behaviors and remind motorists of the importance of traffic safety, especially during a heavily-traveled holiday weekend."
